If you're backpacking in the Jefferson Park area, Park Ridge hike is a must. The round trip mileage may seem easy enough, until you realize the trail gains over 1200 feet of elevation in 1.5 miles. But still, very much worth the effort. From Russell Lake, locate the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) and head north towards Park Butte (Giant hill to the North).
Russell Lake and Mt. Jefferson |
The trail moves you through an open expanse of wild flowers as you steadily gain elevation overlooking Russell Lake and Mt. Jefferson.
Mt. Jefferson |
Eventually you’ll lose sight of Mt. Jefferson as you rise and enter the forest. A few switch backs later you’ll land on the low end of the ridge line. You’ll be exposed to endless views of Mt. Hood National Forest to the north and Jefferson Park to the south as you continue to follow the PCT higher and higher.
While climbing the Ridge, you’ll pass-over into Mt. Hood National Forest at an elevation of 7010 feet.
Mt. Hood National Forest |
As you approach the precipice, you’ll be hit with a sweeping panoramic view of Mt. Hood National Forest to the north. If it's a clear day, you can see Mt. Hood in the far distance.
Mt. Jefferson and Russel Lake in the Distance |
After you've soaked up enough of the north view, continue up the ridge line a little further to experience an incredible view of Jefferson Park to the south. It can be windy at this exposed elevation, so plan accordingly.
