To located the trailhead from Portland, head east on highway
26 for 30 miles before taking the highway 6 exit. A small trailhead parking lot
is located 27 miles down the road. Because King’s Mountain has a lower elevation
than say, Mt. Hood, the hike is manageable all year round. Just make sure to bring trekking poles in the winter.
Starting at the base, the trail navigates through a dense forest while providing scattered sights of the Wilson River. Continuing forward, the trail constantly inclines with rare chances of flat-ground to catch your breath.
If hiking during the winter season, you may encounter thick
snow from the 1 mile mark all the way to the summit.
King's Mt. Lookout |
Alpine views manifest between thinning trees as you continue
to ascend. After traveling 1.5 miles, a short trail junction will lead you to
the first extensive lookout point.
After the brief respite, continue 1 more (steep) mile to the
summit. Both Mt. Hood and the Pacific Coast are visible from the summit on a
clear day.
