In search of Wind Mountain, head east on highway 14 for ten
miles past The Bridge of the Gods and take a left on Wind Mt. Rd. Follow Wind
Mt. Rd. briefly as it bends right and leads you to the parking area. The trail head is usually marked by large, highlighter-yellow cones, located a short
walk down the road from the parking area.
The hike is less than moderately difficult and provides
three amazing views along the way. The
view-quality to effort ratio is amongst the highest of all gorge hikes!
Spur |
About a third of a mile in, keep your eyes peeled for a spur
in the trail leading you to an incredible peninsula cliff viewpoint. Because
there’s no designated trail to follow, the spur may be difficult to find and potentially
hazardous for inexperienced hikers (but well worth the effort).
West-side Summit View |
A panoramic view is not available at the summit; instead,
the top is split in half. Continue along the trail for less than a mile to
reach the west-side summit view point. The west side of the mountain is
extremely windy, hence the name: Wind Mountain. But don’t worry, mysterious arc
shaped stone-wind-shields have been created to aid against the high winds!
East-side Summit View |
Walk a few steps further to reach the east-side summit view
point. Far less windy than its counterpart, the east-side is much more
enjoyable for lounging. Can you spot Dog Mountain?
