McCall Point

Distance: 3.6 miles out and back
McCall Point is an easy, yet scenic, Gorge hike that can be enjoyed all year long! However, I would highly recommend the spring – the trail is lined with balsamroot and other wildflowers that die off in the summer heat.

The hike begins at Rowena Crest: a large roundabout viewpoint overlooking the Columbia River. From Portland, you will travel east on I-84 for about an hour before taking exit 69 for Mosier.  Continue east on Hwy 30 for about 20 miles. Follow the signs for Rowena Crest and park on the shoulder of the road
in the gravel. The trailhead is facing north from the roundabout.

Windy Road of Hwy 30 from parking area

As seen above, the parking area from Rowena Crest is quite scenic itself – providing a 180 degree unobstructed view of the Columbia River Gorge. However, once you climb the trail about a quarter mile further, everything opens up and you catch your first glimpse of Mt. Adams.

Climb higher and you’ll see the winding roads of Hwy 30 and more of Rowena Plateau. Unfortunately these pictures are from early August, so nearly all of the wildflowers have died off. Again, Spring is definitely the best season for this hike.
View from Summit - Mt. Hood (I got a little filter happy)

Incredible Gorge View

With less than two miles of trail to the summit, you’ll reach McCall Point in no time... The summit showcases a panoramic view of Mt. Hood & Mt. Adams and is highlighted with an expanse of the Columbia River Gorge.

My favorite part about this hike? It’s less than 30 minutes from Hood River! Great stop for food, beer, and wind surfing.
